“Dismantling the “wall”: the Psychology of Difficult Students
In October, we will present a topic of special interest for our members in education, and all those interested in theories of learning (note: "difficult student" can translate to "difficult teenager"!)
Every teacher faces students who are bored, indifferent, and even hostile in the classroom. While there are no simple solutions for dealing with such students, four theories in psychology related to motivation, moral development, and learning provide fascinating insights.
Our presenter, Professor Curtis Kelly, will also explain how our pedagogy is based on the industrial model, and how radical humanistic techniques can dismantle the "wall of fear."
A 25-year resident of Japan, Prof. Kelly is a professor of English at Osaka Gakuin University and holds a doctorate in adult education.
