Where: 10th Floor Hilton Osaka
Guest Speaker: Dr. Kurt Rimkus
Topic: The story behind the Contraceptive Pill
in Japan

It is astounding to hear recent statistics that say that more than 30% of Japanese males and 40% of
Japanese females have had sexual intercourse by the age of 15. Whilst Japan seems to be made up of an “active” population, and despite the introduction of the birth control pill into Japan, it is still an amazing statistic that only 1.9% of Japanese females use the pill as a method of birth control.
At our June meeting we will delve into the mysterious topic of woman’s reproductive health in Japan. Dr.
Kurt Rimkus hails from Germany but has spent some 20 years in Japan. He has been in his current position as Medical Director at Organon for the last year. We have asked Dr. Rimkus to talk to FEW Kansai members about the different kinds of contraception available in Japan, what Japan has or does not have here compared to the rest of the world, why exactly it took so long for the pill to be introduced to Japan and why it is not readily used amongst Japanese females. We also hope to learn from Dr. Rimkus tips on how and where to get the pill and what sort of general privacy issues are involved. We are sure this topic will be of interest to many FEW members so we invite you to register early for this month’s meeting.
