Join us in January to hear Juliet Winters Carpenter, acclaimed translator and long-term resident of Kansai, speak about some of the unique challenges as well as the fun of being a translator. While some translators devote their entire career to the works of a single author, Juliet finds one of the most exciting things about her work is the chance to tackle a wide variety of projects. In 2006, she had five book-length translations published, including a child's introduction to Mozart, a book on Shin Buddhism, a murder mystery, a memoir of making movies with Akira Kurosawa, and a book of poetry. Each was different in terms of how she became involved in the project, how long it took, and the basic process involved. Of course, other projects were ongoing at the same time (poems for a movie released Nov. 11, called "Tannka"; a 500-page novel tying together Tiananmen Square and the Kobe earthquake; an essay; a bibliography; a haiku a month; etc.)!
Juliet is also a professor in the English Department of Doshisha Women's College in Kyoto. She completed her graduate work at the University of Michigan and has been in Kansai continuously since 1975.
