Exploring the Role of Photography
in 19th-century Japan
with
Kjeld Duits
When photography was introduced to Japan in the 19th century, the resulting photographs were very popular and heavily influenced the way Japan was – and continues to be – viewed around the world. What made these photographs popular? And why were they so influential?
Using images from his vast collection of vintage photographs of Japan, Kjeld Duits, our November speaker, will highlight unique aspects of 19th-century photography in Japan and the role photography played in shaping views of Japan overseas. He will also talk about what inspired him to start the collection and how it came to be an important part of his work.
Join us for this unique chance to learn about 19th-century Japanese photography, and discover a new perspective on old Japan through Kjeld’s vintage collection.
